KRISTA CUNNINGHAM
Krista Cunningham is a self-taught artist who has spent over 20 years creating and experimenting with a multitude of different media and techniques. She began sharing her passion for art by teaching children’s multimedia classes in her community. This experience was the inspiration for Krista’s most notable art style, whimsical polymer clay figurines and lanterns. After she fell in love with this new source of creativity, Krista became a feature artisan in the many local artisan craft markets, and has since remained a popular vender for the past 15 years. However, her creativity could not be bound to sculpting alone. As her style evolved, Krista started repurposing salvaged wood, old rocking chairs and benches to give them new life. She painted fun characters, scenes, and animals on these pieces and eventually roped her husband into creating unique wood cut outs for her. But she didn’t stop there! Krista’s most recent media exploration was inspired by her daughter’s love of sea glass and her own love of the West Coast and nature. She has combined her love of the outdoors and a passion for colour to create vibrant stained glass mosaics on refurbished window frames.
Currently, Krista focuses on her painted whimsical animal and pet portraits, stain glass resin mosaics, hand painted driftwood and her polymer clay sculpting. While she has always taken inspiration from artists such as Emily Carr, Maude Lewis and Laurel True, her favourite artist will forever be the unhindered imaginations of the children she has taught.
